American Idol 7 – Top 5 Results

The group performance tonight is a Neil Diamond tribute. Like it wasn’t bad enough that we had to sit through a bunch of them last night. The songs don’t suit any of the contestants, and we’re really not feeling the performance.

Constantine Maroulis and Gina Glocksen are in the audience, so Seacrest talks to them for a few minutes. This is well and good, except that in doing so, he completely ignores Ace Young, who’s sitting directly in front of Constantine. Not even a mention of Ace’s name. Blah.

Now it’s time for a recap of last night, like we really needed to see it again. It’s not any more entertaining the second time around.

Paula Abdul messed up!

Did Paula have notes already prepared before the show??

Did producers already pick the winner?

American Idol 7 – Top 5

Neil Diamond week begins with a filler video about… Neil Diamond. We’re bored already.

Jason Castro opens the show tonight with “Forever In Blue Jeans,” which is a great song choice for him. We love the acoustic, folky sound for him. This song loses a bit of its spark halfway through, but it picks up again by the end. Not a bad performance, overall. Definitely better than last week, in hindsight. Our rating: 8/10

Next is David Cook, and his first song of the night is “I’m Alive.” The music starts off great, but the vocals are just so-so. This certainly isn’t a bad performance, but it’s lacking in comparison to his past few. It just doesn’t really stand out. Our rating: 8/10

American Idol 7 – Top 6 Results

Tonight’s elimination begins with a group performance of “All I Ask Of You” from The Phantom of the Opera. The three remaining guys sound amazing together. The girls… not so much. And now, we get to sit through a recap of last night’s show. Yawn.

Next is an interview with Andrew Lloyd Webber. Nothing of any real interest happens, except that Seacrest tries to claim that Brooke’s major screw-up last night was the first time it had happened on the show. Uh… what about the first time she did it, earlier this season? Moving right along, before we get irate…

American Idol 7 – Top 6

Andrew Lloyd Webber night- one of the themes we’ve been looking forward to all season. Hopefully it doesn’t disappoint.

Syesha Mercado opens the show. She’s chosen to sing “One Rock & Roll Too Many.” We all think this is a bit of a strange choice, but it turns out she pulls it off quite well. We finally get to see a bit of personality from her, and the performance goes very well. Our rating: 9/10

Next is Jason Castro, performing “Memory.” We cringe a bit when we find out he’s chosen this song. Really, though, it’s not a bad performance. He’s way out of his element, but it’s a nice, soothing rendition of the song and we enjoy it overall. Our rating: 9/10

American Idol 7 – Top 7 Results

Another round of eliminations begins with a group performance of “One Sweet Day.” This is one of the first really good group performances of the year. It’s about time!

After a reminder about voting for the songwriting contest and a recap of last night, it’s time to begin revealing the results. First out is Jason Castro, who Seacrest sends to one side of the stage. Next is David Cook, who’s sent to the opposite side. Jason is joined by Carly Smithson, and Kristy Lee Cook is sent to join David Cook.

The Ford video is slightly more original this week, if nothing else. Having said that, it kind of reminds us of an old *NSYNC video. Moving right along.
Next, Elliott Yamin performs “Free” from his self-titled album. It’s a good performance, and considering the fact that he just recently lost his mother, he looks great.

American Idol 7 – Top 7

This is Mariah Carey night, which is sort of the Idol equivalent of King Kong. Scary stuff. We’re not convinced this isn’t going to be a huge train wreck.
The night begins with David Archuleta singing “When You Believe.” This is a pretty predictable song choice for him. It’s kind of dull, and by his standards it’s not great. Also, we’re not terribly impressed by the falsetto toward the end of the song. This isn’t horrible, but we’re not blown away. Our rating: 7/10

Carly Smithson has chosen the monster song “Without You.” We immediately fear that this song could be too big for her, and we’re right. This song should just never be touched, because there’s no forgetting how powerful Mariah’s version was. This is a boring, forgettable performance. Our rating: 6/10

American Idol 7 – Top 8 Results

Tonight’s elimination begins with a recap of Idol Gives Back, which has so far raised over $60 million for charity. Viewers who have not yet donated can still do so.

The top 8 performs an encore of “Shout To The Lord.” We can already see the backlash this may cause with some viewers. But anyway, David Cook really belts this out and the performance is great overall. It’s also a good song choice for inspirational week.

Three cheers for filler- this time in the form of a video of Cole and Dylan Sprouse from The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. After that, there’s a cheesy montage of random celebrities singing and dancing while they were filming their Idol Gives Back clips.
