American Idol 8 – Top 5 Results Night

After more than 47 million votes last night, it’s time to find out who gets the boot this week. We’ll also be “treated” to performances by Natalie Cole, Taylor Hicks and Jamie Foxx. Hooray.

This week’s Ford video features slow motion camera tricks, computer graphics and not much else. Seems they’ve gotten really lazy with the concepts for these videos this year, and this one is no exception.

The group performance is also lackluster this week. It lacks much rhythm or really anything entertaining. Moving right along.

Finally, the bright spot of the evening- some footage of the contestants making birthday cakes for Allison and Danny. Well, sort of. Turns out they just end up making a huge mess, but it’s hilarious anyway. This is the kind of thing we wish they’d show more of on this show- it’s nice to see some “behind the scenes” stuff.

American Idol 8 – Top 5 Rat Pack Standards

A full hour, and only five performances. Apparently it’s necessary for the judges to have MORE time to gab? Please kill us.

We’re also not terribly excited about Jamie Foxx being the mentor during Rat Pack week, but he actually turns out to be quite good at it. Probably our favorite mentor of the season, in fact.

First up tonight is Kris Allen singing “The Way You Look Tonight.” We foresee him doing well with this, and he does. It’s very relaxing and mellow. We like that he doesn’t try to overdo anything, and sticks to what he knows he’s good at. It’s an effective performance, and a good way to start the show. Our rating: 8/10

American Idol 8 – Top 7 Results

After 45 million votes last night (another record this season), we’re about to find out which two contestants will be sent home this week.

Tonight’s group performance is choreographed by Paula Abdul. We sort of expect this to be a train wreck, but it turns out to be incredibly entertaining. Who knew they could actually dance? This is easily our favorite group performance so far this season.

The Ford commercial is also better than usual tonight. Are we on a roll? Could we turn out to be happy with the results too?

Time to find out. In a huge anticlimax, Lil Rounds is eliminated right off the bat. Woot! Now we’re happy. She performs one final time, and she sounds better than she has throughout the entire competition. Go figure.

American Idol 8 – Top 7 Disco Night

Tonight’s theme is cringeworthy, so we aren’t expecting much. Turns out that’s mostly a good thing.

Lil Rounds opens the show with “I’m Every Woman.” Oy vey. It’s slightly less horrifying than she usually is, but there’s still absolutely no life behind it and we very nearly fall asleep after the first line or two. Our rating: 4/10

Kris Allen is next with “She Works Hard For The Money.” He plays the guitar and does a very acoustic version of the song, and while our first reaction is that it’s not disco enough, it’s actually pretty good. He’s really good at this kind of music and we’re glad he’s sticking to his guns. Maybe not our favorite performance of his, but it’s good. Our rating: 8/10

American Idol 8 – Top 7 Results Show

Tonight, another elimination looms and we’ll have to sit through performances by Jennifer Hudson and Miley Cyrus.

The Ford commercial is boring- another overdone moving magazine covers idea. Next.

The group performance this week is the cheesy ’80s classic “Maniac.” We groan when the song starts, but it turns out we actually kind of like it, in a cheeseball sort of way. It’s definitely much less painful than last week’s Kylie Minogue travesty.

After some footage of the top 8 at the premiere of 17 Again, it’s time for some results. It’s good news for Allison Iraheta and Adam Lambert right off the bat, and Anoop is the first person in the bottom three.

American Idol 8 – Top 7 Movie Night

Tonight’s theme is Songs From The Movies, and it’s a collection of terribly overdone songs. Oh well, you win some, you lose some, eh?

Allison Iraheta opens the show with “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.” While this sounds okay on paper, it’s not so much. She starts off very low and very shaky, and never quite finds the right key. For Allison, it’s a pretty poor performance. Combine that with the fact that she’s going first tonight, and we’re a little afraid for her. Our rating: 5/10

Anoop Desai is next, singing “Everything I Do (I Do It For You).” He sounds really good, but as usual, he’s very robotic about the whole performance. There’s still not enough emotion behind it, and that’s a big problem for us. Technically speaking though, it’s a nice performance and he gets points for that. Our rating: 8/10

American Idol 8 – Top 8 Results Show

When tonight’s results show begins, we find ourselves thinking it’s a little depressing that these melodramatic recaps always make the last episode look way more entertaining than it actually was.

Tonight’s show will feature performances by Flo Rida and Kellie Pickler… and also, apparently, a surprise appearance by Frankie Avalon at the beginning of the show.

The group performance is “Can’t Get You Outta My Head.” Noooooo! This is one of the most terrible songs ever written. Why, why, WHY would they have chosen this song? Do they WANT to kill the show? This is horrible.

American Idol 8 – Top 8: Songs From The Year They Were Born

Tonight the contestants will be singing songs from the years they were born. This is one of our favorite themes every season, so we’re excited.

Danny Gokey kicks things off tonight. This is a bit surprising, since the pimped contestants almost never get that dreaded first spot. He sings “Stand By Me”… and unfortunately, chooses a really boring arrangement of the song. It’s like elevator music. We’re not excited. Our rating: 5/10

Kris Allen is next with “All She Wants To Do Is Dance.” We’re not sure this is a good song choice. We like that he’s in the audience while he performs, but overall it’s just not as good as we’ve seen him do in past weeks. It lacks his usual spark, and we’re a bit let down. Our rating: 7/10

American Idol 8 – Top 9 Results Night

After 36 million votes last night, we have another round of results… as well as performances by David Cook and Lady Gaga.

The Ford commercial is mildly entertaining this week. Shock! Awe! The group performance of “Don’t Stop Believin’,” on the other hand, is not. After one good group performance last week, it’s gone back to crap.

After some backstage footage and time for the contestants to imitate and poke fun at each other, Seacrest starts breaking the top 9 into groups. Megan, Matt and Kris are one group. Adam, Lil and Allison are another. Which means the last group consists of Scott, Danny and Anoop. We think we know what’s going to happen here.
