Season 9 - Top 10 Girls
After having an extra day to prepare, the girls perform tonight. This had better be good. Thankfully, Crystal Bowersox has recovered and will be able to go on with the show tonight.
And speaking of Crystal Bowersox, she performs first tonight. She sings “Long As I Can See The Light,” and while we’re not crazy about the song itself, she performs it incredibly well and it’s a good choice for her. We’re sold on her. Our rating: 8/10
It has finally happened- a Miley Cyrus song has made its way onto Idol. Kill us now. Haeley Vaughn sings “The Climb.” On paper this sounds like it could be a good idea, but it’s not. At all. Half the time she’s talking/screaming, and the other half, she’s singing way off key. We sort of feel like we’re at the grade school concert where none of the kids have ever been in front of an audience before. This is terrible. Our rating: 2/10
Last week, Kara told Lacey Brown she should sing “Kiss Me.” Guess what Lacey sings tonight? Ugh. This seems so desperate. Combine that with the fact that she sings in an obviously put-on cutesy little girl voice and practically skips around the stage, we kind of want to bash our heads against the wall after 15 seconds. Our rating: 3/10
Katie Stevens sings “Put Your Records On.” While we enjoy this song, and we like that she tried to do something a bit younger and more fun, this song just doesn’t do it for this competition. It’s not vocally impressive enough and it does nothing to make Katie stand out. It also doesn’t appear that she has any idea what she’s gotten herself into with this competition, and she seems a bit lost. Our rating: 5/10
We cringe when we hear that Didi Benami will be singing “Lean On Me.” Then she starts singing, and she’s totally changed the melody. Why would you do that to such a classic, well-loved song? WHY? Not to mention she sounds incredibly shaky- this is like the vocal equivalent of walking across a frozen pond when you’re not sure it will hold your weight. The whole thing is very awkward and just not good. Our rating: 2/10
Michelle Delamor was told last week that she should take a risk… so she sings… Creed? Oh boy. Her version of “With Arms Wide Open” is so watered down it’s completely bland. And then she tries to diva out with it, and it just makes things worse. Bad idea, Michelle. Our rating: 3/10
Next is Lilly Scott with “A Change Is Gonna Come.” Normally we detest this song, but her version of it is unique and really grabs our attention. We’re still not completely blown away, but we’re really rooting for Lilly. We want to see her stick around because we think she’s got great potential to get continuously better and be really impressive later in the competition. Our rating: 8/10
Katelyn Epperly plays the piano tonight during her performance of “The Scientist.” While our first reaction is that this is WAY too slow, it grows on us quickly. It’s low key and mellow, but it’s beautiful. This is easily Katelyn’s best performance so far. Our rating: 8/10
“Walk Away” seems a bit of a strange song choice, but Paige Miles does it anyway. And not very well. She changes the arrangement at the beginning and she just ends up sounding out of breath and rushed. And then she screams through most of the rest of the song. We don’t like it. Our rating: 3/10
And speaking of strange, here’s Siobhan Magnus. Everything about her rubs us the wrong way, but since this is a singing competition, we put that aside. For a minute. She sings “Think,” which is a bad idea. Turns out it’s not as big a train wreck as we’d expect it to be, but it’s still just not that impressive as far as we’re concerned. She just does not have enough personality for a song like this. Our rating: 7/10
Tomorrow night, two more guys and two more girls are sent packing.
