Season 9 - Top 8 Girls
Tonight is the last chance the girls get to impress the audience and make it into the top 12. And it’s only an hour long, so it’s a pretty fast moving show.
Katie Stevens starts things off with “Breakaway.” This is a terrible idea. You should never sing Kelly Clarkson on this show, and definitely not this early in the competition. And on top of that, it’s a completely lifeless performance. It’s like she doesn’t believe in what she’s singing, or doesn’t care, or maybe both. Our rating: 5/10
Siobhan Magnus is her usually creepy and weird with “House Of The Rising Sun.” This is very somber and dark and… well, boring. We just can’t get into her and we don’t see what the big deal is. We very nearly fall asleep this time around. Our rating: 6/10
Lacey Brown sings “The Story,” and as usual, she’s shaky and off-key and sings in an annoying little girl voice. And besides all that, the song is slow and boring. And of course, the judges praise it. We still don’t get it. Our rating: 2/10
After last week, we’re really looking forward to Katelyn Epperly’s performance of “I Feel The Earth Move.” Unfortunately, though, it’s kind of disappointing. It’s certainly not terrible, but it really doesn’t stand out, and it’s pretty run-of-the-mill and just okay. Our rating: 7/10
Didi Benami sings “Rhiannon” next… and it seems she’s finally found the right song for her! This is really quite good, especially considering the train wreck she was last week. Sure, there aren’t any huge diva notes here, and “powerhouse” is not a word we’d use to describe it, but she doesn’t need those things. This is a good, solid performance. Our rating: 8/10
Next, Paige Miles sings “Smile.” Which is really kind of awkward and painful, since she looks like she’d much rather cry. This is very slow and boring, not to mention incredibly depressing. She’s nearly inaudible for about half the song, but maybe that’s a good thing. This is all kinds of terrible. Our rating: 1/10
We despise “Give Me One Reason,” so we’re disappointed when Crystal Bowersox sings it. But she sings it well, and we can almost get past our hatred of the song as she performs. The difference between her and the rest of these girls is that she is already an artist, while the rest of them come off like they’d like to be, but they’re not quite sure. This is one of the few good performances tonight. Our rating: 8/10
Lilly Scott closes the show with “I Fall To Pieces.” SO awkward! Before this started we were thinking it’d be either really good, or really bad… and, sadly, it’s leaning toward bad. We love Lilly, but this is a terrible song choice, and the whole thing is just uncomfortable. We don’t like it. Our rating: 5/10
Tomorrow night, the guys bring it one more time before the top 12 is announced.
