Season 9 - Top 8 Guys
After the nightmare that was last night, we’re hoping the guys can really bring it tonight and entertain us more than the girls did. Fingers crossed.
Lee Dewyze opens the show with “Fireflies.” Kind of a weird song choice, and we’re not totally sold on it. It’s certainly not terrible, but it’s not nearly as good as some of the other performances we’ve seen from Lee. We do like that he seems much more comfortable on stage tonight, though. Our rating: 7/10
Alex Lambert’s choice of “Trouble” seems like a good idea, but really, his voice is still annoying. Not unique, but annoying. Yeah, we said it. We just can’t get into him. And this just seems so safe- like he purposely chose a song he knew he could at least not go off key on. We’re not impressed. Our rating: 6/10
We’re laughing about Tim Urban singing “Hallelujah” before he even starts. While he’s not vocally as terrible as we expected… come on. This song is supposed to be a ballad, not a funeral march. This is so slow. And boring. And uninspired. It stirs zero emotion in us, and usually this song nearly brings us to tears. We don’t like it. Our rating: 5/10
We have to wonder what drugs Andrew Garcia was on when he chose his song: “Genie In a Bottle.” REALLY? What a stupid idea. And he doesn’t redeem it with good vocals, either. The whole thing is raspy and weak and stupid. We’ve never particularly cared for him, but this makes us want to hurl ourselves off the nearest cliff. Our rating: 2/10
Casey James just keeps getting worse. Tonight’s performance of “You’ll Think Of Me” is laughable. Instead of standing and posing, or posing with a guitar, tonight he poses on a stool. And still sings badly. Is this really even singing at all? It sounds like about four notes throughout the entire song. Train wreck. Our rating: 3/10
Aaron Kelly starts off really shaky on “I’m Already There,” and it never really gets much better. He’s certainly no Anthony Fedorov, who also sang this song during season 4. He always seems unsure of himself, and this song does him no favors. Our rating: 4/10
We’re laughing at Todrick Hall before he even starts to sing- just because we’ve come to expect that we will. And not in a good way. For a minute we almost think we’ll have to take it back, because his intro is decent. But, it turns out it’s a fluke, because as soon as he hits the verse it’s all kinds of bad. We never see any connection in him, like he cares about what he’s doing, and tonight is no exception. Our rating: 3/10
So, Michael Lynche is our last hope for a standout performance. He sings “This Woman’s Work,” and while we generally don’t care for this song, we think this is a good choice for him. And… IT IS! For the first time tonight, we get to see someone performing like they believe in what they’re singing. Every other contestant on the show should be watching Michael and taking notes tonight. Our rating: 9/10
Tomorrow night, four more people go home, leaving us with this season’s top 12.
